Corberán: “We are committed to improving”

The Valencia CF coach talks after the game against Girona FC

Valencia CF coach Carlos Corberán addressed the media after his side fell to a 2-1 defeat away to Girona FC.

Goals conceded from set pieces

The first half was tough in general, starting with a major blow: Diakhaby's injury. We struggled to find a way of attacking Girona. They didn't create many chances either, but from one of those attempts, they managed to take the lead. Valencia CF grew a little before the break, and then, in the second half, the team were much more together. We attacked with both full backs on both flanks, we were very mobile, and we were superior to the opposition. As a result of that superiority, we managed to level the game. The next opportunity was a set piece that we didn't defend well. When a situation repeats itself, you have to work better on it. We have dropped several points, that's the reality. There are details related to competing that are costing us the results we want.

What has changed with Valencia CF compared to last season

Dynamics change with performance; improved performances lead to better results. There's no other way. We have to improve in defence and attack to extend the things we do well to happen for the maximum possible time. In the first half, the team knew what the game was about; it was a stodgy contest for both teams, with neither side able to show superiority. Then we were more aggressive, won balls back, and in the second half, we saw a reaction, greater mobility, and better dynamics. The way forward is to improve the actions we haven’t been completing well enough. The fans want a better dynamic. As I said yesterday, this dressing room and this coach are aligned with the demands on us. We will take responsibility and work to improve things.

Perceived progress

I see that the team have been suffering a series of setbacks that we’ve been unable to overcome. Total dominance is something that is difficult to achieve, but we have an obligation to improve in different areas. Today I saw a positive reaction; the team didn't give up at any point, but we weren't rewarded for it. We went for the game with the conviction of winning it during the second half, but we weren't able to convert the number of chances that we wanted.

Worry

I’m not worried, but I’m always busy working to improve. I analyse every match; we'll look for ways to increase our defensive solidity, our control of the game, and our chances. The Valencia CF coach's commitment to achieving the best for Valencia CF is unwavering.

The need to improve

There are times when it's hard to move the ball into the opposing half in an elaborate manner. We have the resources to do everything. We're not going to try to take play back when we can attack with speed. When you win the ball back in the opposition’s half, you have to use speed and be quick in your attacks, like in the second goal we scored against Getafe CF. We must continue to enhance those actions because they're part of the team’s identity. In the moments where we need to have a plan, we must continue to improve to create more attacks and chances. I don't see any limitations in the team; we must continue to improve in terms of the adjustments we make. Today, with more mobility, we were able to generate more attacks in the second half. We understand that the fans want to see a better Valencia CF, and we are committed to improving.
